Ian is the Reward and Benefits Manager at the University of Lincoln overseeing all aspects of reward including payroll, pensions, role evaluation and employee benefits. Having started his career in finance before moving specifically in to payroll and pensions Ian has a background in both the public and private sector having previously worked for Moy Park, Egg PLC and Lincolnshire County Council.

A firm believer and champion in the importance of pay and benefits as a driver for change and supporting organisational agendas Ian has previously overseen teams that have been acknowledged for their achievements at sector awards for pay and benefits.

Karen Thomson is Director of Armstrong Watson Payroll Services. Karen’s role is to ensure the payroll services offered by the company, are as efficient and as competitive as possible. Providing excellent customer service is a top priority for Karen and Armstrong Watson. Karen’s knowledge is extensive and covers all aspects of payroll, benefits in kind, reward packages including salary sacrifice, local government pensions, automatic enrolment and employment law. Before taking up the appointment with Armstrong Watson in August 2015, Karen headed up the policy team at the Chartered Institute of Payroll Professionals for more than thirteen years. Here Karen was responsible for ensure employer and member views were represented to government and disseminating the information and views. Karen’s previous work history includes Cumbria Police, Two Castles Housing, Carlisle City Council and the City of Edinburgh Council. Karen is a member of the HMRC Administrative Burdens Advisory Board and Employment and Payroll Group consultation forums. Karen also sits on the employer panel for NEST and is a member of the Cumbria Local Government Pensions Board. Karen is also co-opted on the CIPP Board. In her spare time Karen is a tutor for the CIPP, tutoring the Foundation Degree and MSc programmes. Karen recently graduated from a work based learning Post Graduate Certificate and is now a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. In addition Karen is Trustee and Secretary for the North West English Springer Spaniel Rescue charity.

Ian has been in the payroll profession for nearly 30 years, processing hundreds of payrolls in both public and private sector, large and small. Moving from hands-on exposure, he has most recently been involved in educating the profession, where his wide-ranging experience and up-to-date knowledge ensures he is able to impart this information to professionals in writing and through face-to-face presentations.
Ian’s ‘passion’ at the moment is trying to get professionals to realise the huge implications of increased devolution within the United Kingdom. This changes the way that we have to look at every piece of payroll and employment-related legislation and guidance that is issued, more than it ever has previously.
This is one reason that Ian is now thrilled to be the Head of Legislation and Compliance at Cintra HR and Payroll Services, who constantly demonstrate their commitment to quality and compliant payroll and HR software, support and services.
Ian is proud to be a Fellow member of the Chartered Institute of Payroll Professionals (CIPP) and a holder of the Masters in Payroll Management.

Head of Industry Liaison and Large Employer Communications
The Pensions Regulator

Neil Esslemont is the head of industry liaison and large employer communications at The Pensions Regulator. In this role he is responsible for engaging with the UK’s industry suppliers regarding understanding and readiness relating to workplace pensions reform, as well as communicating with the largest employers in the UK to help them understand the new employer duties, including the duty to automatic enrol eligible workers into a pension scheme.

Neil has more than 25 years experience in dealing with large companies in both private and public sector. Neil previously worked as a client director for BT and Siemens, and as a management consultant for PriceWaterhouseCoopers. Neil has a technology background in computer software engineering, gained after graduating from Exeter University with a Maths & Physics BSc.
